E.On Declares A Cut…

E.On are 5th out of the largest energy companies to announce price cuts. They say it is a response to the latest decrease in wholesale energy costs.

E.On have declared that the cut will affect 75% of their customers and this would lead to a price slice of £31 for the customer’s average annual bill.

Although there is to be cuts, Dr Tony Cocker – chief executive of E.On did warn that costs are very likely increase again.

The only company who has not cut prices in gas or electricity is Scottish Power.

Out of the five largest companies, two have lowered their electricity charges and three have lowered their gas prices.

According to Ann Robinson from Uswitch – the price comparison site: “Households can save up to £420 by moving to dual fuel, paying by direct debit and signing up to a competitively priced deal – a far bigger saving than being offered by suppliers lowering their prices”.

Surely Scottish Power should be following suit?

Energy prices are tipped to rise by as much as 15% this year

We have been warned yet again, that commercial and residential energy bills are about to soar.

The country’s biggest supplier, British Gas has just increased the price of its best-buy residential online dual fuel tariff and its fixed rates.  This move it is thought will be replicated by other energy suppliers.

The blame, according to the suppliers sits very much with the unrest in the Middle East, which is pushing up wholesale gas prices.

Households and businesses are already feeling the squeeze with many facing reduced income/ profits whilst outgoings, such as energy bills, are increasing.

There are ways to reduce energy bills, not least by looking to the new supplier entrants to the market which should improve competition.  The consensus is that business and households alike should act now to prevent costs from escalating.

What can you do to protect your home or business from rising gas prices?

  1. Consider alternative and or new suppliers
  2. Recognise that wholesale cuts are not always passed on to the customer – look at retailers past commitment to this
  3. Look at fixed tariffs – this can be a gamble. What might happen is that you pay now to make savings later. However, costs could fall and from that you would not see the benefit.  Most indications are that costs will rise and fixed tariffs can offer a sense of stability in this changing market.
  4. Ask for help! Shop around using the services of an energy broker; they may obtain prices and deals that are not offered via other direct methods.

It is very important for business gas users to compare business gas prices when renewing their contract; in order to maximise the savings available and to ensure that they are working with the right provider for them.  If you would like to ensure that you are benefiting from cheap business gas prices when your current contract ends let us shop around for the best business gas price for you.  We pride ourselves on our industry knowledge and understanding and our service is free.  Contact us on 08444 931 444 or complete our free business gas quote form.

Energy Suppliers Profits Continue to Rise

Gas and electricity companies are making more profits out of their customers than they were three months ago according to Ofgem’s Chief Executive, Alistair Buchanan.  Profts are reported to have incrased by 50% in the past four months.  At the end of last year, on a typical household bill of £1,200, the suppliers would make £65 annual profit, this has now risen to £97.

Five out of the “Big Six” Energy firms have increased prices over the winter period and have blamed this on increasing wholesale prices however suppliers have been accused of not decreasing energy bills when the wholesale cost of energy falls but they are quick to increase the costs when wholesale prices rise.

The “Big Six” have been accused of increasing their margins sharply while delivering a “substandard” service.

Npower to Raise it’s Gas Prices?

Npower are hinting that it will be following suit of the other major energy suppliers and will be raising it’s prices this winter.  Guy Johnson from Npower confirmed that the company’s retails business was suffering due the rise of wholesale gas prices this year of more than 25%.  He confirmed that they haven’t increased their prices for two years and therefore Npowers customer’s are paying 7% less that two years ago.

Scottish Power, SSE and British Gas have already confirmed price increases and EDF and E.on have confirmed that it will not raise it’s prices just yet.

It has been predicted that energy bills will increase by 15 – 25% by 2020.

British Gas Profits Rise as Prices Increase

Last week British Gas announced a rise in gas and electricity prices of 7%, they have blamed this increase on rising wholesale costs.   Centrica are said to have quoted the increase of wholesale gas prices as 25% and the increase of wolesale electricity prices by 14%.

However Centrica, who own British Gas, are set to make higher profits than expected.  This has made consumer watchdogs question the rise in prices and suggest that Centrica are taking advantage of it’s customers.   In July Centrica were quoted to have said that it’s half year profits had been boosted by the low cost of wholesale gas and questions have been asked saying “if this is the case why have consumers not seen the benefits of these low gas prices”.

The consumer watchdogs are asking for more transparency in the pricing of this sector as, without this, there is no way to tell if consumer and business gas bills are fair.
